Report: Balancing security and freedom at universities

London, 1 December 2014 – In a recent report prepared by the Alexandria Trust, education authors Marion Lloyd, Henk Rossouw and Sarah Lynch present three case studies which highlight the conflict between keeping college campuses safe and supporting the right to free expression in transitional democracies in Brazil, South Africa, and Tunisia.

In the report, titled "Balancing Security and Freedom at Universities", a Tunisian student tells of routine interrogations under the old dictatorship, South African historians tell of outspoken academics being targeted for assassinations, and a Brazilian professor recalls the era when students were tortured and “disappeared”.

Following the case studies is a synthesis of what administrators have learned about these difficult decisions.
